VARIABLE DATA PRINTING
Variable Data Printing or VDP is one of the new products Gerald Printing introduced in 2007. One of the best ways to command the attention of a potential customer is call them by name. People want to see and hear their name - it’s personal!
VDP uses digital technology to vary one or more elements in a printed piece. Using a computerized database, content is extracted and placed, based on design rules for creating a customized message from text and graphics. As a result, whether a print run is ten prints or 10,000, VDP can make each piece different by changing the information (photos, charts, text, and other objects) as each piece is printed.

MAIL PREPARATION
Mail preparation is a natural extension of VDP because in many cases, the name, address, and proper postal bar code are digitally printed at the same time as the variable data. Mail preparation includes the following:

• Checking the database obtained from you (or for you) to see that it is properly structured with the “fields” required for the addressing task.
• Adding the zip+4 coding (CASS certification for USPS) so the best postal rate can be obtained.
• Sorting the database so the pieces will be addressed in the proper order for bulk mailing.
• Notifying you of any undeliverable addresses that need correcting to go at the best rate and separating them for first class mailing if necessary.
• Preparing the database for a mail merge if your mailing includes a customized letter to be inserted in an envelope.
• Addressing the mail piece and applying the proper indicia.
• Tabbing the mail piece if required to pass through the postal service automated equipment.
• Placing the finished pieces in the proper trays for bulk mailing.
• Printing and checking the USPS summary reports and informing you of the amount of the postage so a check can be taken to the post office.
• Delivering the reports and the mail prices to the post office
