Heat, humidity, and direct sun are hard on outdoor graphics. The right substrate depends less on budget than on how long the sign needs to last.
Short-term: coroplast
Corrugated plastic is the standard yard sign material. It is inexpensive, light, and good for a few months of campaign, event, or open-house use. It will eventually warp in sustained heat.
Multi-year: aluminum and PVC
For anything permanent — property signs, directional signage, storefront panels — aluminum holds flat and resists corrosion. PVC is a middle option that works well under cover.
Lamination matters more than material
A UV laminate is what keeps color from fading. On vehicle wraps and window graphics it also protects against abrasion from washing. We laminate anything intended to live outdoors past one season.
Legibility at distance
A rough rule: one inch of letter height per twenty-five feet of viewing distance. Most signs that fail are not badly printed, just hard to read from the road.
