We have printed a lot of giveaway items over fifty years. The ones that work share a trait: the recipient would have bought something like it anyway.
Pick usefulness over novelty
Drinkware, notebooks, and good pens get daily use. Novelty items get a laugh at the booth and a trash can on the way out. If you would not use it yourself, it is not worth your logo.
Fewer, better items
A hundred tumblers that people keep will outperform a thousand cheap giveaways. Spend the same budget on a smaller run of something durable.
Keep the branding light
A single clean logo placement reads as considered. A logo, tagline, phone number, website, and address on one mug reads as an advertisement, and people leave those behind.
